Your 'view of Church militarism.'

Maran was an excellent fighter, and an excellent, upstanding member
of the Church, and with as much humility as possible, I do have a
great deal of confidence that I am very similar to my older brother
in that regard. 'Thugs' and their 'unavoidable brutality' is just
a cop-out that people who aren't cut out to be Church members use
to justify their selfish actions.
On a similar note, people leave the Church in record numbers be-
cause it is much easier to be evil than it is to be good, espec-
ially during an era where bloody conflict is encouraged among a third
of the Achaean guilds -- for no reason other than to create more
bloodshed.
