A Pathology of the Spirit

Sapience,

It has been documented that the earliest sign of infection from this plague is intense craving for and obsession with citrus. Personal experience and a cursory survey of others confirms that this is the case. Cast your minds back - when was the first time you experienced peculiar, compulsive thoughts about citrus? If you cannot recall a case in which this has occurred, query your fellows. I can assure you that if you do not know at least one person directly who has experienced such an inexplicable craving, then a direct acquaintance will know someone who has.

Meanwhile, the behavior across the continent these recent months and years, and bickered about on these very boards, cannot be explained by any rational mind. The assault upon Aster Malik, the Keeper of the Iron Crown appealing to Targossas in desperation for aid, Captain Blackgale's vendetta against the Hearth, Cyrene's sudden turn to theocracy - these are not actions of those who are sound of mind. They are the acts of those deeply under the influence of a madness. One that has been present in the population long predating the appearance of the Mysian Rot's physical symptoms.

But what of the curative effects of the Royal Lemon, you ask? Or the distillate of the Striped Lime? Have they not been shown to cure the effects of this disease, so well documented in the histories?

No.

Consider the substance known as gleam. Those under its hold experience cravings, and progressively worse symptoms should they avoid the use of the substance. Those symptoms are alleviated - miraculously, even - through renewed use. The supposed cures are nothing more than false promises, temporary relief from a far deeper malady. As such, they should be destroyed.

The Mysian Rot is not an affliction of the body, it is the physical manifestation of an affliction of the spirit that has been with us for some time. And the only true path to overcoming such an affliction is through faith.

Prayer, unity of congregation, a healthful diet, and restorative sleep - this is how the spirit is mended. Not through bitter fighting over citrus.
