Freedom is Evil?

I am talking about the Ashtan understanding of Freedom, and will be
assuming it everywhere in this post. Recent public posts by Ashtan
members made me suspect that Freedom is basically the same with Evil. I
will try to clarify my position here, and will be glad to hear some
replies, confirming this, or clearing my misconceptions.
After different discussions I have come to a point that Evil can be
described as drive for self-improvement, but at the cost of lives of
others, not caring about the life-being of the world in general, but
about yourself, or the group of people you ally with. This has been
confirmed by philosophers of Evil, so can be regarded as a fact, no
matter how you feel about Evil.
Now let us have a look at the concept of Freedom. As it has been
described in recent posts, the Ashtan members are allowed to do whatever
they wish as long as they do not inhibit the Freedom of other Ashtan
citizens. But the Vertani showed us a good lesson. While caring for the
Freedom of Ashtan members, Ashtan does not care at all about the Freedom
of outsiders. Now how does it really differ from Evil? We have the same
- a group of people who wish to self-improve, grow, have their free
will, and not really bothering how this affects the freedom or Growth of
other people.
Of course you can say that members of Ashtan do not support the actions
of each other. But there's the following problem: Ashtan can be a
sanctuary, a base for any actions of any member of Ashtan, like it was
in the Vertani case. Aren't all Ashtan members helping each other simply
by offering this sanctuary?
I am wondering if somebody can point me at the real difference between
Evil and Freedom.
