The Trolls of Achaea

A Trolls character: hero portrait for the Achaea race page.

The Trolls are Achaea’s giant-blooded race. Descended from the legendary giant Gruul and a human woman, they stand seven feet tall or more, shrug off lightning, and have been the generals of armies for centuries. They are not always intelligent, the stereotype says. The lore proves otherwise.

Troll lore and origin

The racial home of the Trolls originates deep in the swamps south of the Savannah. The race has since spread far from the fabled city of Kasmarkin. Trolls are descended from the legendary giant Gruul and a human woman. Physically they have a metabolism completely different from humans and are only slightly less intelligent than the human baseline.

Their dependence on physical gifts has made them less magically adept than other races. But this is a generalisation, not a rule. During the Wars of Succession, troll mercenary legions were said to contain mages, disproving the widespread theory that trolls were not intelligent enough to wield magic. In modern times, trolls are often the generals of armies. Their aggressive nature serves them well in war, but it is their tactical and strategic mind that has put them in command.

The stereotype to navigate is the assumption that trolls are stupid. The lore explicitly addresses this: “only slightly less intelligent than humans” and pointing to troll mages and troll generals as evidence against the assumption. Your troll character lives inside this tension. Other characters may underestimate you. You can play that to advantage, push against it, or simply ignore it.

If you want to play a character whose physical presence enters every scene before they do, and whose mind earns respect when others stop expecting otherwise, Troll is the strongest pick on Achaea.

Troll appearance

Trolls are large, slender humanoids with great physical prowess. Most reach a mature height of seven feet or more. Some grow much taller. They often have strong or heavy facial features, coupled with a hulking or burly stature that contributes to the unfavourable stereotype other races attach to them.

Skin has a grey cast to it, sometimes greenish in tone, though very human-like shades have been seen. Hair and eye colour span a broad range, consistent with the human ancestry on the maternal side. Yellow eyes, unusual in humans, are common among Trolls and give them a distinctive look.

Troll racial abilities

Trolls have one racial trait, named for their giant ancestor.

Trait: Descendant of Arn

  • Resistant to ELECTRICAL damage.
  • Chance to stun on blunt attacks.

Electrical resistance reduces damage from lightning spells, electrical traps, and certain class abilities that rely on shock damage. The stun chance on blunt attacks is a meaningful offensive perk: every time a Troll lands a blunt-damage strike (most melee attacks, certain weapons), there is a chance to briefly disable the target. This stacks with the strength bonus to make Trolls particularly disruptive in melee combat.

Troll base statistics

Trolls are strength-leaning, with a small intellect dip.

StatValue
Strength13
Dexterity12
Constitution12
Intelligence11

The strength bonus is the primary advantage, supporting heavy melee combat. The intellect dip is the trade, in line with the cultural framing of physical prowess over magical study.

Troll specialisations

At level 10, after you have joined a class, you can pick one of four Troll specialisations.

SpecialisationStrDexConIntStat shift
Unspecialised13121211(baseline)
Mercenary15121210+2 Str / -1 Int
Interceptor13141111+2 Dex / -1 Con
Defender13111411+2 Con / -1 Dex
Seer12121213+2 Int / -1 Str

Mercenary takes strength to 15: the maximum for Trolls. Heavy melee specialist. Interceptor sharpens reflexes for nimbler combat styles. Defender trades agility for durability, useful for tanking and protective roles. Seer lifts intellect to 13, offsetting the racial dip for magical classes. This is the specialisation that confirms troll mages in the lore.

What a Troll might look like

Class is what shapes a character’s silhouette. The art below shows what a Troll looks like in a few of the 21 classes available. These are illustrative examples, not recommendations. Any race can play any class in Achaea.

How to roleplay a Troll in Achaea

Trolls carry a built-in social tension and a long warrior heritage. A few things worth knowing if you pick Troll:

You will be underestimated. Other characters often assume Trolls are stupid before getting to know them. The lore makes this explicit and also explicit that it is wrong. Your Troll character can play this in three useful ways: lean into the stereotype as a deliberate front, push hard against it from word one, or let other characters reveal themselves by how they treat you.

Aggressive nature, tactical mind. The lore frames Trolls as aggressive but tactical. The race has produced more generals of armies than any other. Your Troll character can credibly be a war veteran, a current mercenary, a strategist by training, or simply someone with a strong sense of when to attack and when to wait.

Kasmarkin is the fabled origin. The Troll homeland traces to the swamps south of the Savannah and the fabled city of Kasmarkin. Most modern Trolls have spread far from there but the place remains a cultural touchstone. A Troll character can know about Kasmarkin, have family from there, or be searching for it.

Gruul is your ancestor. The legendary giant Gruul is the paternal ancestor of the race. Pride in the lineage or an affinity for the giant heritage reads as natural for a Troll character. The maternal side (human) provides the cultural and linguistic baseline.

Yellow eyes are signature. The yellow eye colour, uncommon in humans but common in Trolls, is a useful description detail that other characters notice. A Troll without yellow eyes is unusual and worth a backstory note.

The mage exception is canon. The lore specifically notes troll mages exist and disprove the magical-incompetence stereotype. A Troll Magi or Alchemist is fulfilling a documented (and respected) sub-tradition of the race. The Seer specialisation supports this build.

If you want a race whose presence is impossible to ignore and whose stereotype is yours to confirm or shatter, Troll is the most rewarding pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trolls are an excellent pick for new players who want a physically powerful melee character. The strength bonus combined with the stun chance on blunt attacks gives strong offensive output, and electrical resistance is useful against several class abilities. The unfavourable stereotype the race carries is roleplay texture rather than a mechanical disadvantage.

Trolls start with 13 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 12 Constitution, and 11 Intelligence. They are strength-leaning. At level 10, after joining a class, you can pick a specialisation (Mercenary, Interceptor, Defender, or Seer). Mercenary takes strength to 15 for melee specialists; Seer lifts intellect to 13 for magical classes.

Trolls have one racial trait, Descendant of Arn, which provides resistance to electrical damage and a chance to stun enemies on blunt-damage attacks. Both abilities reflect the troll giant-blooded heritage and aggressive combat style.

Trolls originated in the swamps south of the Savannah, with the fabled city of Kasmarkin as their cultural homeland. They are descended from the legendary giant Gruul and a human woman. In modern times, Trolls have spread far from Kasmarkin and are common in every city-state on Sapience. They are often the generals of armies, given their aggressive nature and tactical minds.

Yes. Any race in Achaea can play any class, and Trolls are no exception. The strength lean makes them especially natural as melee warrior classes, but the lore explicitly notes that troll mages exist and the Seer specialisation supports magical builds. Race never locks you out of a class.

Other races to consider

Three races worth a look if you are still deciding:

Dwarves

Created by Phaestus and given a soul by Proteus. Stocky, hardy, and resistant to four damage types. The other major “tough warrior” race. Pick Dwarf if you want durability instead of raw physical presence.

Horkval

Insect-like humanoids from beyond Sapience. Like Trolls, Horkval are physically imposing with strong damage resistance. Pick Horkval if you want a more alien form alongside the imposing physical profile.

Xoran

Reptilian humanoids from Krenindala. Strength-leaning, fire-breathing, six feet tall. The other major “imposing warrior with an unusual origin” race. Pick Xoran if you want scales and fire-breath in place of grey skin and stun attacks.
