I just have to say how humorous I find it that Taranis saw it fit to attack someone based on the sole reason that they're "attacking an innocent." Now, had he been part of Oakstone which, for story's sake, had just conquered that village, then I would understand him protecting his property. The church has exercized this right on Shastaan, and Shanugis herself has shouted her disapproval of her citizens being attacked.
But, as far as I know, he does not have any jurisdiction over that area and therefore cannot claim that he is its protector. If you think that he acted within his right, then think about this: what if I said "I feel so sorry for the butterflies. Fluttering around so helplessly then being captured and stuffed into Vellis's nets and sold on the black market! Why, I should start killing every newbie that catches butterflies!"
The point is, this land would be a pretty bad place to live if every time you went outside and killed a black rat, Napoloen summoned you and vivisected you on the spot. Or every time you killed a butterfly Isildur would see it fit to convocate you and slaughter you mercilessly.
However, despite what I have just said, I must betray myself. From now on, I will keep a vigilant watch over the farmer, for he has told me in secret that he hates having his eggs "greeted out of him." I am now self-proclaimed "Protector of chickens everywhere"
