You're finding out about old news because a citizen was mad and wanted to hurt their soon-to-be-former community on the way out. This project hasn't moved toward that direction a long while. Will it again? Not my call. I've always been more of a medical scientist than bomb-maker, and to me P.E.A.C.E. really isn't about weapons at all.
P.E.A.C.E. is just a series of experiments in the fields of metallurgy and energy generation, with wildly exciting applications. It was a wonderful day when that metal was invented, myself and a few others down in the lab, popping bottles of champagne over this achievement and all it could mean.
But yes, we are Hashani. We find anything at all and that gremlin in our brains will go, 'yes, but can it explode?'
I will admit to being very angry after a certain butchery of Narcisse, being informed that those lives didn't matter because something would replace it. I am not famed for sensible handling of rage and watching Eleusians clap and cheer while sick people struggled to escape with their lives, only to be eviscerated by wolves and thorns, haunted my dreams. The screams of the Angai children contained a proposal for a practical test.
Also, we were in active armed conflict. The only surprise here is that you thought the status quo would exist forever, but we had an opportunity to change it.
Save the what-aboutisms, for in Harae we tried to evacuate the people before the volcano erupted. We were ready with housing, support, prepared to act in the most humane way possible. They were not passive to their fate, they actively declared it their duty to die as sacrifices to the volcano. We had a few successes, and these people were scorned by their community as dishonourable cowards. We kept our promise to the refugees.
Even so the loss of life will burden my soul forever.
Eleusis crows about destroying all cities with the death that entails. Hashan has no such dreams of omnicide. Eleusis is aghast that someone might want to destroy them. The other five cities are not, as Eleusis tells us so all the time.
Ours is an ideology of choice, and we are content to live and let live but we have this neighbor who disagrees. Peace wasn't working, so maybe we give P.E.A.C.E. a chance, nay?
Fury motivates innovation, tis true, but innovation's reward goes far beyond securing Hashan's future. What we've learned regarding alloys, elementalism, and energy science will prove to be a boon to Sapience and Meropis.
