The Seleucarian Debate Series

Hail, Sapience.

A day after the next Serenade, the esteemed Nissa of the Lucretian Athenaeum has graciously agreed to organise the Seleucarian Debate Series, conceptualised in honour of the legendary debates between Nikolas - later Nicator - and Severian.

The first of these series will be held at the town centre of New Thera, just as those opponents of old began. The second will be held in the shadow of the cliffs of the Pash Valley - close to where we believe the Theatron Sarapin once stood, where the last great debate was held and culminated in Severian finally joining Nikolas to find Seleucar.

We encourage all to participate in this debate series and ponder the same or similar questions as Nikolas and Severian might have. Nikolas was an eternal dreamer and believer of hope and goodness, while Severian was ever-pragmatic and, some might say, even a touch cynical. From issues of morality to the metaphysical, they clashed at length on many topics - and so shall you.

To enter, all you must do is turn up at either debate series with a team of three (including yourself). This is similar to the previous debates that Nissa has held. No pre-registration is required until just before the debate.

Nissa will choose teams to face off, provide a topic, and then give both teams time to deliberate before the debate begins. She will provide more instructions, but in essence, you will have to think and speak on your feet.

This is the time for opinions and ideals to be challenged and argued, probed and defended. Instead of trading barbs through ink and shout, face your opponent instead in a real-time clash of wit and logic. Conquest is often built on the efforts of steel, but a well-placed word can also turn minds and hearts to achieve great works - as Nikolas and Severian proved.

Scholars, orators, speakers, dreamers - this is your chance to shine. We hope to see as many teams as possible join to prove their mettle, as well as spectators to witness and cheer them on.
