Clarification Regarding The Discovery Of Longclaw Isle

I wish to settle some confusion about the discovery and whereabouts of Longclaw Isle.

In brief. To the best of our knowledge, Longclaw Isle was first traversed in Scarlatan 817 by the crew of JPF Black Wake, a ship captained by Jinsun. I was on board at the time, along with a large crew of Ashtani sailors and pirates. Mercer Frey did not discover this phenomenon, nor its associated island. He also did not name it. The isle is in fact -named- Longclaw Isle.

Those aboard the JPF Black Wake chose not to claim the discovery of an isle that had clearly been in existence for some time--there is a shipwreck littering its beaches--nor did they choose to name an isle that very clearly already had a name.

For obvious reasons.

I wrote a report of our findings for the benefit of Hashan's Navy but, in light of more widespread interest in the island, I have elected to share some details below. Those interested in learning more about Longclaw Isle are encouraged to sail into the fog themselves. Ideally without claiming they discovered it.

The early legs of the voyage that would end with our second battle against the kraken were uneventful. But, as we sailed in the JPF Black Wake north alongside Lothos, a deep fog overtook our ship. From the bow, the appearance of the ocean turned from a pristine if choppy blue to a what appeared to be a series of whirlpools cloaked in white. The chops vanished, Lothos vanished, and the ocean as we knew and recognized it vanished.

We sailed on until we encountered an island.

We attempted to dock, and found that we were only able to lower our rope ladder and climb down from the ship. We did this, and found what appeared to be an entirely uncharted landform. I clambered down the ladder to seemingly endless barren sand dunes, in the Wilderness. I walked around for a bit and, upon finding nothing but more barren sand dunes, elected to leave the Wilderness. I found myself in an area called Longclaw Isle, on a debris-strewn stretch of sand. There was clear evidence of a shipwreck, along with split-open barrels, planks of a torn ship hull, and the remains of a draconic figurehead. There was, significantly, a firepit, suggesting that some sailors survived and, at least for a time, lived on this island. Further east, I found seaworn boulders and, finally, a golden sand beach studded with shells. As I walked along the shallows of the island, I discovered a serrated shark tooth gleaming dully on the ground.

Having explored much of the new island, we climbed aboard the Black Wake and cast off. The fog persisted but, as we continued sailing south, we eventually cleared it and the normal pattern of ocean chops near Lothos was restored. In early Ero, the fog was sighted again by Accipiter and Kaburia, but this time the fog was hundreds of metrons south of Lothos, just west of Zaphar Isle. In late Ero, Mercer reported his discovery.

Penned by my hand on the 23rd of Ero, in the year 817 AF.
