Greetings Sapience,

I welcome you to a new age of thievery.

The pre-eminent thieves of Sapience - men and women of guile,
intelligence and the nimblest fingers - have come together to form The
Sable Guild. The Guild hereby declares its absolute and unquestioned
control of thievery in the lands of Sapience.

Henceforth, no thief will practice his art other than under the aegis of
the Guild and its leadership, the Black Council.

To the thieves of Sapience, we offer much. Any who wish to practice the
art of thievery as a Guild member, are advised to speak with me at their
earliest convenience, so that they may do so as a Black Hand of the
Guild. The consequences for practicing the art of thievery, or
attempting to do so, without membership of our Guild will be brutal and
relentless.

The second arm of the Guild, the Black Sword, is without doubt, the most
deadly and numerous group of assassins and warriors ever assembled.
Unguilded thieves will be hounded without mercy or surcease until they
accept our most generous offer of membership or cease their acts of
thievery without condition. To those warriors who wish to join their
ranks for the purpose of aiding in the slaughter of those unwise enough
to practice thievery outside the Guild, I also offer an invitation. You
will swear no oaths of loyalty to the Guild nor to any of its members.
All we ask of the Sword is a dedicated focus on the slaughter of
unguilded thieves.

For those of the Guild, thievery is no base occupation. It is art and
our thieves are artists. Not all who wish to join the Guild as a thief
will succeed. We expect standards of competence and flair. Fools will
not be tolerated.

As the Sleight of the Sable Guild, I will act as the public face and
point of contact for those who may have questions of the Guild. I
encourage you to speak with me. For this is not a Guild of Evil, or
Chaos, or Freedom. It is open to those who follow the Light, and those
who prefer the Darkness. Thievery knows no ideology and our membership
and Council reflect that belief.

Should you suspect an individual of practicing thievery outwith our
Guild, I would ask that you contact me to confirm their membership. The
punishment meted out to those who remain unguilded should provide great
satisfaction to the victims of those unlicensed thieves.
