I was fishing in the Actar valley when suddenly the river was
overwhelmed by a rush of putrid green liquid. I quickly reeled my line
in and moved up the river searching for the source of this disgusting
mess. I found that this nauseating invasion was coming over the
waterfall at the head of the valley. Searching further, I encountered
Cazarin and Bodo, one of the halfling guardians of the valley. Bodo,
much more responsive than he usually is, said that the Naiad of the
river had become ill from this pollution and that someone needed to
investigate and stop the influx of diseased water.
Bodo said that rope would be needed to get up the cliff to follow the
source of the waterfall. I went to Ashtan looking for this rope but to
no avail. I went on to Eleusis and found some and returned to Actar.
There I found rope already hanging next to the waterfall. I climbed it
and followed the river to where a pipe spewed this horrid liquid into
the river. At this same spot there was a beaver dam and a decrepit,
unmoving waterwheel.
After pondering the situation, I attempted to plug the pipe with a shard
I had picked up. The pipe would not accept the shard. After further
thought I sought help from my fellow citizens by asking that someone
send me a Mushroom sigil. I had the idea that I could destroy the pipe
in the hope that the outflow could be stopped. Later events will show
that it was good that this attempt failed. I must mention that as I was
making pleas for assistance to my House and my City, a Divine Voice of
Someone Powerful said "You're not supposed to be there. Don't talk about
it." I was much dismayed at this, believing the Divines had sufficient
power to remove me if I truly was not supposed to be there.
After the useless explosion and a sip from a Health vial, and taking
courage in hand, I searched the area further and encountered a large
party of adventurers including the said Bodo talking with a strange and
very tall being with a single eye. And that eye was not the survivor of
a pair subsequent to some unfortunate accident, but an eye naturally
solitary, centered in the being's forehead. This being, a Cyclops, was
apparently a guard because he was standing in front of a large gate. The
party, led by Lord Finchy of Cyrene, was asking admission to the
fortress beyond the gate in order to seek out the source of the vile
invasion. There was some debate between the party and the guard and
between the guard and his chieftan in the fortress but eventually the
gate was opened and we went in. Unfortuantely, I had not been following
Lord Finchy and became lost. After a bit of wandering I found a room
with some odd equipment attached to some pipes. These pipes seemed to be
damaged and clumsily repaired but the damage seemed to be much older
than the invasion of foul gunk. There was another adventurer there who,
for the sake of discretion, will go nameless. I watched as he turned a
valve and pulled a lever on the equipment attached to the pipe. Great
shouts and threats came from elsewhere within the castle complaining
that sewage had flooded the chief's kitchen. I resolved not to touch
anything myself.
Very shortly thereafter, Lord Finchy and the party came into the pipe
room with another of the tall one-eyes, named Hynes. Hynes was the
Cyclops apparently responsible for maintenance of the sewage system.
Lord Finchy had a document which he called the blueprint and which he
handed to Hynes. The Cyclops was becoming frantic at the continuing
shouts and theats from his Chieftan and didn't have a clue what to do. I
offered my thoughts that the tap, spigot and lever attached to the pipe
would have to be set in exactly the right combination to set the system
back to normal. One of the party retreated to where the pipe overhung
the river. After a couple attempts to fix things, again bringing forth
great shouts and promises of dread destruction from the Chieftan, we hit
on the correct combination and the water flowed clear once again. We
returned to the valley and, with the thanks of Bodo, went our various
ways.
