Actually, the current state of nautical affairs is due to a number of
factors. Chief among them are:

1) the Anarchy Rebellions of Ashtan, which happened early in the Modern
Age and halted the shipping trade dead in its tracks; and

2) the territorial disputes of the tritons and merfolk, who are given to
sinking most landwalker vessels that encroach upon their domains.


Blame Eliza Montagenet and the late Lord Blackblood. Blame the watery
races if you must. However, it is my experience that the Lord of the Sea
makes no quarrel with honest-to-goodness sailors who keep their hands
clean of piracy.
