Knighthood

I think we can all sympathise with Githoniel's point. In the past, the
rank 'Knight' was one which was bestowed after a great deal of hard
work, a great deal of proving of oneself. All three knight guilds upheld
a rigorous scheme of training and testing before one would be
knighted... and the new class system threatens to dilute that. Anyone
may call him or herself 'Knight', however small or large they are,
however poor or wealthy, old or young, however honourable or
dishonourable. Those who have worked long and hard for for their title
are inevitably to be debased by the reputations of those who appoint
themselves knights on a whim.
It is a sad situation.
But it is an inevitable one, and there have always been cases in the
past of adventurers knighting themselves. Generally, the problem was a
small one because of the nature of the class system: there were few
rogue Knights, and many of them had in fact been been knighted before
they left, or else did not usurp a title they did not possess. There
have always cases of dubious titling, and there always will be (indeed,
one might call into question my own pretentious assumption of nobility),
and the sooner we accept that and look for the true mettle behind the
name, the better.
Githoniel's view is a fair one. The rank of Knight is to be reduced, the
feudal society of Sapience has been questioned. I, too, hope that any
who call themselves Knight hold to the Knightly ideals of honour that
make all three guilds so celebrated and respected throughout the realms.
However, they probably won't, and complaining about it is like pissing
into the wind.
