Concerning the Patience of Foreigners

I write wholeheartedly agreeing with my fellow members of sapience about
how important the lives of the denizens of our world are, and I would
like to impart my opinion about military conflict in cities to the
Vertani: It does not bode well for you. We Achaeans do, in fact,
reincarnate, and practical warfare against our cities cannot result in a
true, final death of its citizenry. What's even worse is that you might
have unwittingly have bred a new generation of Achaeans to hate the
Vertani, whether it is due to the unnatural disruption you have caused
in their youthful lives, or have hurt them by slaying family and guild
members. This is how permanent, long-lasting hatred is bred and created,
and once it is let out the bag, there is no turning back.
This, in turn, has led me to study the issue of patience. As a species
capable of inter-planar travel, it would seem only natural that as you
have explored other worlds and cultures, you have come to understand the
potential breath and width of culture and life, and, and one would
expect that your patience for dealing with what you would consider to be
"backwards" people be considerably longer than the patience of the
native people. As newcomers, you would need more patience than that of
the natives, and perhaps even forgive some acts of foolishness on their
behalf, if only to make people understand your benevolent intentions
with greater clarity. However, this is not the case with your arrival in
our land. I will not summarize what went on between the Vertani and
other cities in this post. As we are unfamiliar with who you are, where
you come from, and your intentions, xenophobia is a natural fear-and the
only way to overcome that is with more than ample patience for mistakes
made on our part.
As proof that this must be the case, note that the Vertani are highly
extremely well-organized--cities in sapience don't even have a truly
equivalent post for a diplomat, or, more to the point, the level of
organization seen in these foreigners. Second, and the most important
fact that might have precluded this problem is that the Vertani looked
down at us with disrespect to begin with. They espouse their own
language, their own culture, even their own religion. Now, while there
have been no attempts to verify whether or not the "All" of these people
is at all equivalent to our Logos, the very fact is that the Vertani
made no attempt, at all, to study our culture to any serious length or
degree. Given that sort of attitude, wouldn't one think that they would
have more, not less patience then in dealing with us, since we would
essentially be looked down upon as barbarians? Instead, the Vertani have
been quick to marshall force of arms against the great cities of this
land-essentially, even an attack from an uncivilized people cannot be
dealt with by communication and diplomacy-they took force as the number
one means to attempt to teach us a lesson. But in reality, all this does
is further cement and make permanent the divide between members of
sapience and these Others.
What I am getting at is that the Vertani have no patience in dealing
with us and have made no serious attempts to understand seriously as a
world
every institution in sapience, whether it be city, religious, guild, or
otherwise, are at risk of coming into their wrath as a result of their
cultural superiority. Because of this, future conflicts are only a
matter of time, not a matter of bad diplomacy. My advice to the whole of
sapience: Be curious about the Vertani. Try and understand them, even if
they don't want to understand us. Because whether you are at war with
them or not, you will have to deal with them, and knowing them will give
you a greater advantage both on the diplomacy table and on the
battlefield. To the Vertani: If you really care about the members of
sapience, show some curiositiy of your own. Do anything but dismiss us
without first contemplating our worth. Because your protection of these
smaller towns will depend on knowing who they are, their strengths and
weaknesses, and if you really intend on defending them from the larger
cities, you would do well to show curiousity and an open willingness to
exchange ideas with the other cities in sapience to understand them.
