A Ghazal of Past Love

They met on the bridge, above the river's deep,
Now he searches the stars, where her gaze used to sleep.
The wind whispers her name, but the water is cold,
Each wave holds her secret, but the truth it will keep.
His heart is a garden, where roses once bloomed,
Now thorns twist his soul, where the shadows now creep.
The stars in the sky are her eyes, still and bright,
Yet when he looks closer, their light starts to weep.
He calls to the heavens, but they answer with night,
The river moves faster, but his soul cannot leap.
In every face, he seeks her, but they are mere dust,
Like stars in the distance...fading and steep.
Her absence is silence, and still, he will cry,
For a love lost forever, a love he will keep.
