"Companion"

"Companion"

A Knight is a true companion
For a proper Lord or Lady
So you whispered ever quiet
With your every step and his.
Delicate but sturdy
Pensive but eager
Loving and imposing
Seductive contradictions
For the children in the clouds.

Did you flutter when they came
With squinting eyes and punctured tongues
And he arrived at your side
To defend you against all foes?
Did he seem at once a man
And a shroud of metal
A dented pitcher, melted gold
Poured anew at supper?
Those gilded shadows nipped
By Emperors' decrees
A Lady never tells
And her Knight never leaves.
Tinted observations
From the bottom of a teacup.

Perhaps they fire other volumes
But fables fade in mist
A mystery still held sacred
By some woman on the ground.
Magic stronger than Catastrophe
Barreled story aged in time
Tapped and poured far sweeter than before.
A Knight is a true companion
For a proper Lord or Lady
So I listen ever quiet
Dreaming of their face
And never of their wings.

Penned by my hand on the 19th of Valnuary, in the year 821 AF.
