The Stretching Sand

It's well past midday, the sun retires;
White sand lights with its golden fires
And so I stop to take a rest
Knowing well this day was best
While listening to feathered criers

The wind turns my head to look away
Returning thoughts of the yawning day
And there upon the sandy strip
Are footsteps in its moistened grip
Each step a breath that my mind replays

Each love, each sadness and sorrow there
Pressed out step by step; open to stares
Some were welled deep with heavy tread
The burdens born feeling like lead
But mostly, my own making of cares

The few happy moments had with them
A pairing to match, steps light and thin
But soon, as if summoned away
The footsteps went a diff'rent way
And I was left all alone again

And so I sigh with such ill remorse
That I never walked a diff'rent course
One that lead to happiness free
One much better suited to me
A path that lead to love's true source

The sun then sinks and closes to night
I whisper that things can be alright
Then I sleep and dream for so long
That when I wake, nothing is wrong
Till I love again and live in fright
