Fairy Circle

As dawn breaks o'er the forest,
I wander in the haze.
Through the trees and undergrowth,
A vibrant, verdant maze.

A mushroom circle lies before
And in the breaking day,
I see, at last, the sight of sights
As the fairies come out to play.

Rainbow hues and sparkles
As they dance their merry waltz
In and out the mushrooms
Do my eyes betray me false?

But now I hear their laughter
Sweet bells upon the breeze.
I move a little closer
And, at once, the dancers freeze.

One then moves towards me
At my flute she shyly glances.
"Oh bard, now you've discovered us,
Will you lead us in our dances?"

I take my flute and play for them
A melody of the sky
And as they dance on wings of glass
They lift my music high.

For hours I play, transfixed
By the beauty that I see.
Until one fairy leaves the dance
And stands in front of me.

"Oh bard, you have performed
And we are all well pleased.
In the magic of your music,
Our hearts have all been seized.

Now we return from whence we came.
Do not, our presence, seek.
But we would leave you with a gift."
And with that she kissed my cheek.

They faded into the forest
And within that fairy dell
I could hear a sound, receding,
As the tinkling of a bell.

Now you may think a kiss
Was a poor kind of pay,
For playing at their dance,
For more than half a day.

But I say to you, no wealth,
No honours I could attain,
Could ever match the chance to see
The fairies dance again.

Penned by my hand on the 25th of Chronos, in the year 378 AF.
