Do as I say not as I do

The rumbling began shortly after the citizens of Targossas had gathered for a ritual, as they are prone to do. Faint, incomprehensible whispers accompanied the sporadic shiftings of the earth, no amount of straining could decipher the hushed dialogue.

Then came the mimic.

A strange being of emerald sludge, the mimic glided its way across the city of the Bloodsworn, encountering citizens who cautiously followed its glistening trail. Soon enough, it took the appearance of one of its watchers, an exact replica in every way except the unnerving grin it plastered across its borrowed face. Mischief was soon made as various residents of the Dawnspear expressed indignation at the bothersome activities of the mimic. Demands to leave were made to the creature who ignored them all.

When the first blow was struck, the mimic did not respond. It simply stood mutely as it was slain. It absorbed the violence into itself, learning the ways of the people it was observing.

It had learned how to kill.

The next mimics that arrived were not so docile. Quickly did they adapt to the examples being set, killing those they encountered with little difficulty. Led by Yen Jaydde-Stormcrow, several Targossians advocated strongly for a non-violent approach to the situation and the city eventually aligned on this position, showing remarkable restraint in their dealings with the homicidal impersonators.

When the mist began to rise and spread across Blackstone Isle the decision was made to excavate below in hopes of finding the source of the strange phenomenon. Trusting in their ability to deal with anything that arose, no protections or preparations were put into place. Once the labourers broke through, the entirety of the Isle was quickly engulfed by the swirling emerald mist and its horde of murderous mimics. A series of tunnels and a mysterious lake, all shrouded in dense fog were revealed but there was little to be seen or done given the situation at hand.

Several months were spent deciding how to handle the situation. Rituals were attempted that had little effect. The skills of Depthswalkers were employed to spread a message of calm to the mimics. The non-aggression policy, miraculously, stayed in place. All efforts were made to lead the mimics in learning non-violent behaviours. Eventually, the city united on a bold and innovative course of action: Conduct a massive convocation ritual to spread the mist across the Dawnspear. Several months were spent storing enough devotional energy to fuel the dramatically expanded rite. Citizens skilled with ritual worked furiously to identify the perfect combination of action and intent to bring about the desired result.

Eventually, the appointed time came and the city gathered to unleash what they had wrought. Their efforts were successful as they summoned the mist from its subterranean home to spread thinly across several isles, dispersing the mimics at the same time. It remains to be seen what secrets lie in the descent below the city and the tamed mist that now resides in the Dawnspear.

Summary: Targossas faced a dual threat in encroaching mists from underground and mimics that copied their violent tendencies to devastating effect. They discovered a cave system under Targossas that was the source of their troubles and through innovative ritual work, alleviated the situation for the moment.
