A Fond Farewell to the Weaver

Written by: Anonymous
Date: Monday, September 8th, 2008
Addressed to: Everyone

He appeared as silently as snowfall many decades ago to aid Sarapis, the
Logos - and later, the Great Mother - in the Weaving of the realm, as
part of the divine pentad. Without fanfare, with grace, eloquence, and
gentle humour, he wove the weft and warp of Creation for many years, and
in so doing, wove a part of himself into the cloth of Achaea for all
time. Now he has gone, departed to work the weave in other parts of
Creation, remote planes where he is now needed. Remember him well:
Clementius, the Weaver.

Below lies a transcription of the farewell ceremony.

A small natural cavern
Despite appearing a small, cramped cavern from the outside, once
entered, the space within seems to somehow expand to always seem of cosy
yet comfortable dimensions for the precise number of persons within it,
regardless of how many enter or exit the cave. The walls curve gradually
as they rise to form a natural dome overhead, low enough almost to
touch. Packed dirt forms the floor, patches thinning here and there to
reveal rough grey limestone beneath. A soothing warmth radiates through
the cave, though there is no discernible source. A resplendent golden
tapestry drapes across the cavern wall. The seamless, rectangular frame
of an impressive ivory loom oscillates in the ever-changing light.

Clementius arrives.

The Maiden, the Matron, and the Crone seat themselves in an approximate
half-circle upon the earth.

In complete silence, the Crone brings two withered hands to her mouth
and blows upon them gently, black eyes deep and fathomless.

From within them she draws a length of silver material, binding it to
the distaff.

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "Hail, Weaver. For the thread of the
Weave, I give to you the first breath of a newborn babe, and the last
breath of a dying man.

As Urdu passes the distaff to Verthandi, the Matron carefully winds
semi-transparent fibres of pristine ivory reminiscence around the
distaff securely.

Verthandi, the Fruitful Matron says, "When I was a young girl, once on a
full-moon night I sat on an ocean cliffside in the arms of my love, and
we shared ripe black plums and listened in silence to the waves beating
against the shore. My memory of this night, I give to you, Weaver,
for the thread of the Weave."

With youthful, dextrous fingers, the Maiden deftly binds a cluster of
scintillating blood-red fibres from the distaff to the cleft in the top
of the spindle before whirling it around in both hands, twisting the
thread taut before winding it around the spindle's oblong body.

Skuld, the Eternal Maiden says, "Hail, Weaver. I give to your thread the
silken curve of a Sidhe's shoulder, and the lashes of an albino bat
within a cave so deep within the earth that he has never felt the warmth
of dawn."

Skuld, the Eternal Maiden says, "All this and more we give unto you. And
so it shall be woven."

Upon silent feet, Maya, the Great Mother approaches the three lunar
priestesses, who chorus their hails to the goddess.

Maya, the Great Mother says, "For the Weaver's thread, I give to you a
soft down feather plucked from the nape of the Great Grey Owl."

As the goddess utters these words, a soft grey feather appears within
Urdu's hands, and she quickly spins it into the thread.

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Ourania, Goddess of the Moon says, "For the Weavers thread, I give to
you the heart of the Evening Star, taken from the centre of its own
fiery heart."

As the goddess utters these words, a fiery black orb appears in the
Crone's hands, and she quickly spins it into the thread.

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Shaitan, God of Oppression says, "For the Weavers thread, I give to you
this unbreakable chain of bloodsteel links."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

crystal summit of the highest peak of the Kx'Khrah realm."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Valnurana, Goddess of Sleep and Dreams says, "Weave into the thread the
petals of this orchid, imbued with fond dreams of those comforted by the
Weaver."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Valnurana, Goddess of Sleep and Dreams says, "As you are remembered in
the waking, Weaver, so you shall be remembered in the Dream."

A cloud of silvery mist appears in Valnurana's outstretched hand, the
kind countenance of the Weaver flickering within. With a wave of Her
arm, the mist rises to the heavens and disperses in the firmament.

All the world settles in a brief moment of repose as a new reverie is
added to the repertoire of Dreams.

first gambling chip."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

the eggs of a locust. It has no purpose now. It will be useful in its
own time."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Nelinae says, "I give to you a bottle of wine, to sate the palate of the
Weave."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Pygmalion says, "For the Weaver's thread, I give to you this perfect
hourglass that has been filled with grains of sand from each shore of
our world."

Urdu, the Crone of Reckoning says, "And so it shall be woven."

Maya, the Great Mother says, "Mortals, if any of you have a contribution
to give to the thread for the Weaver -- a word of thanks, a blessing, a
treasured memory from your life, something imagined, something real...
whatever it is, however long or short, you may now have your chance.

As Urdu, the Crone, continues to spin the thread, her sister priestesses
rise to their feet and begin separating out the thread, deftly weaving
them into the warp and weft of the loom at the centre of the cave.

Urdu, the Crone rises and joins her sisters at the loom, catching hold
of the fabric woven from the loom and setting upon it with needle,
thread, and scissors, shaping the cloth in motions to quick for the eyes
to decipher.

Urdu, the Crone rises and joins her sisters at the loom, catching hold
of the fabric woven from the loom and setting upon it with needle,
thread, and scissors, shaping the cloth in motions to quick for the eyes
to decipher.

Verthandi and Skuld cease in their work, and silently the crone Urdu
holds up a seemingly plain traveller's cloak, long and cowled, and
offers it reverently to the Great Mother. A single thread from the
bottom hem of the cloak connects it still to the loom; however, no
matter how far it is stretched, the thread seems to magically lengthen
to traverse the distance.

Maya, the Great Mother takes the cloak and sets it gently across
Clementius, the Weaver's shoulders, and the fabric seems to flow around
him to fit like a glove.

Maya, the Great Mother says, "With your wise and subtle ways and words,
you have Woven yourself into the fabric of Achaea eternally."

Maya, the Great Mother says, "You will be dearly missed in your travels,
and none shall forget you. Farewell - for now, beloved Weaver."

Clementius clasps His hands before Himself and performs a simple,
respectful bow.

Clementius, the Weaver says, "Honour to you all."

Clementius, the Weaver says, "And thanks for the goodies!"

Clementius departs.

As the Weaver departs, the remaining cloth upon the loom seems to burst
into life, spilling over onto the cavern floor in a tangle of silken
ferns.

Maya, the Great Mother says, "In memory of the Weaver, as you leave,
take with you a single Weaver's Beard fern. Take it with you to a spot
-- any spot of your choosing, and leave it there. Be sure that you do
not drop it anywhere you do not wish for it to remain. Wherever you
leave it, there it shall bloom, in honour of Clementius the Weaver."

Lorielan, the Enlightened says, "For the Weaver's thread, I give you the
crystal summit of the highest peak of the Kx'Khrah realm."

Hermes, the Messenger says, "For the Weaver's thread, I give to you My
first gambling chip."

Maya, the Great Mother says, "Mortals, if any of you have a contribution
to give to the thread for the Weaver -- a word of thanks, a blessing, a
treasured memory from your life, something imagined, something real...
whatever it is, however long or short, you may now have your chance.

faith, and you just made my experience here so much better. Once Dread
Lord Dagon started throwing the dead bodies of bartenders at me, I knew
I'd found my home. It's amazing that you even took notice of my
silliness, and often I think to myself, when dealing with a youngster,
what would Lord Clementius do? And I end up having a lot more patience
with them. Thank you so much."
