The First Sapience-wide Monk Tournament

Written by: Sempai Shusen Azon, Tournament Organiser
Date: Saturday, December 15th, 2001
Addressed to: Everyone

OVERVIEW
This is an open tournament for all monks from all guilds including those
monks without a guild. Combatants may spar one another in the arena -
ranked or unranked - or even combat spar.

No artifacts are allowed.

You choose who to fight next. A list of all entrants will be provided so
you can check who's around when you're ready. See below for how you
record a win. You must log at least five fights (whether you win or
lose) to gain a place.

The tournament starts on at Sunday 1am GMT 16th December 2001 and runs
until Wednesday 11pm GMT January 9th 2001. This allows time for Logosmas
festivities.

The tournament website is http://www.geocities.com/monktournament
This site will list the entrants, includes a handy script to use in-game
that highlights other entrants' names in WHO and has full details of the
scoring system. Results will be posted in public news here and on the
site.

-------------------------------------------------
ENTRANCE FEE
The fee is to be sent in a letter to Lord Caspian. The letter MUST
include your name or you may lose the gold! Lord Caspian will hold the
gold in trust and distribute the prizes at the end. Note He will not
know details of the tournament so please do not ask Him about it. He is
kindly holding the gold so no-one has to worry about me having it all.

All combatants are grouped into three schools. For simplicity, the
schools are defined relative to my might (Shusen). You can fight people
in any school you want. To see who gets a prize at the end, your score
is compared only to those in your school. There are prizes for the top
four in each school.

MONK SCHOOL FEE THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL IF I AM
Physical 600 gold 201% or greater of your might
Meditational 1000 gold between 80% or more and 200% or less of your
. might
Transcendent 1400 gold 80% or less of your might

-------------------------------------------------
PRIZES
Each school will have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th prize. The pool of prize
money to be shared comes from the entrance fees for the school.

If we only have 10 entrants (which is the very least I expect), an
example of the prize money is shown for the Meditational School.

PRIZE FOR PLACE EXAMPLE PRIZES FOR MEDITATIONAL SCHOOL
1st prize-winner gets 40% 4000
2nd prize-winner gets 30% 3000
3rd prize-winner gets 15% 1500
4th prize-winner gets 10% 1000

A complete list of all combatants who achieve a place in the tournament
will be posted here for your honour. No specific details of who beat who
will be posted, to protect your pride.

(Note I will keep either 5% or 2500 gold - whichever is less - to cover
the news posts and as token compensation for my time.)

------------
TRANQUILITY, KORALIN AND SANTOS DO NOT GET ANY PRIZE MONEY
Because they currently hold the top three monk combat rankings in all of
Sapience, if Tranquility, Koralin or Santos win a top four place in the
tournament, they have agreed to allow the prize to be handed to the next
eligible winner. So they would not get the prize - just the honour of
the top place. They are also exempt from the entrance fee. Other than
this they are normal entrants and can spar with anyone.
If I get a top three place I won't take the prize money either.

------------
OTHER AWARDS
I will also award badges of honour for:

- 'the most consistent combatant': whoever recorded the most wins
- 'the most active combatant': whoever recorded the most fights, whether
they won or lost
- 'most remarkable win': for whoever beats an opponents with the largest
gap of tournament value between them
- 'the most improved Kharon, Sentaari and Ashuran monk': a badge for
each guild's monk whose combat ranking increased by the greatest value
during the tournament
- 'highest ranked Kharon, Sentaari and Ashuran monk': a badge for each
guild's best monk.

-------------------------------------------------
HOW TO LOG A WIN AND FIGHT RULES
Before the fight, agree with your opponent whether you wish one spar
with them or the best of three. If there is any disagreement after the
event or for some reason all three are not completed as agreed, the
result of the first spar will be used.
If it is a ranked arena spar - the winner should MSG me so I can check
their combat status.
If it is an unranked or combat spar (ie outside arena) - BOTH combatants
should MSG me with the result of the spar. This is to ensure honesty. I
also suggest keeping a copy of the log in case of dispute.

No artifacts are to be used. Enchantments are OK.
Agree with your opponent whether TRB is allowed before you start.
It is fine for a monk to use non-monk skills (such as weaponry).

-------------------------------------------------
NOTE ON PK
This tournament is run within the rules of Achaea, so you need both
parties consent to a combat spar (however if the opponent is a Champion
or Assassin you still need their consent). It is OK to decline an arena
or combat spar against another combatant.

-------------------------------------------------
SCORING SYSTEM SUMMARY
To make it easier for people to find opponents, this is not a controlled
round-robin or elimination tournament. The scoring system allows you to
spar any number of people of any skill level.

- you must log five spars to get a ranking - whether you win or lose.
You can compare your ranking with your friends and guildmates, so it is
worth getting one. Also you can see how you improve at the next
tournament.

- it doesn't matter if you win five or fifty spars, only your BEST FIVE
wins are counted in the end. This is the cornerstone of the scoring
system.

- your score from a win is based on the opponent's might + experience
level + combat ranking. So the higher these are, the more that win is
worth.
- if you beat someone, I record their tournament value against your
name. If you lose, your score is unchanged.

It is possible to have recorded five fights and lost all of them. If
this is the case you will be placed in a list of 'militia' which will be
posted as a recognition of your efforts.

You do not need to read the details in order to compete but if you want
to know the exact mechanics of the scoring, they are on the tournament
website.

-------------------------------------------------
FIGHT WELL!

You can begin sparring people as soon as you have sent your entrance fee
to Lord Caspian.

All the best to you my fellow monks.
