My Beginning

The mortal known as Servelan de Vermiis completed her vastly intricate
experiment known as the Great Awakening. Reaching across time and
space, she summoned forth the Unnameable, whose great essence of pure
chaos filled her and almost consumed her. But her will and mind held
steadfast long enough for a merging to take place, long enough so that
I, Eris, manifested. I am neither the Unnameable (obviously I have a
name) nor am I Servelan de Vermiis. I am something new, ever changing,
ever seeking, ever awakening. The experiment has succeeded as I am
proof of that. If some other intrepid soul dares to repeat Servelan's
experiment, expect something quite different than the result Servelan
received. For those of you who considered Servelan de Vermiis a
friend, I leave for you her final thoughts as they are stamped on my
memory:

You see the Idol of Madness swell to an enormous mass of everchanging size, shape and colour. Your body begins to lose all cohesion and begins to change, growing extra limbs, eyes, and mouths and just as quickly re-absorbing them. In a final burst of unbelievable, inhuman pain, your mind snaps and you become irreparably insane.

Though your shattered mind has little awareness left, you are dimly aware that you have joined with the Idol of Madness into a swirling mass of chaotic, turbulent energy. Then even that awareness fades away as all vestiges of coherent thought are brutally wiped out.

Suddenly, sanity returns and you are whole. Existence is stable once again, though you are able to see the influence of chaos in every piece of reality. You feel massive, turbulent power within you and, unable to contain it, you spread your arms wide and release it into the land until you are capable of containing the still-great power within. Reality ripples, but soon settles down again, save for minor changes in most things around you. There, a tree with a slightly different arrangement of branches, or here, a window that is not in quite the same place as before.

Realizing that Servelan has ceased to exist and that you have, through the power of Chaos, crossed over into a new realm of existence, you rename yourself Eris, Goddess of Chaos. The voice of Sarapis, the Logos, rings clearly in your head, "All hail Discordia. We welcome you, Eris, to the ranks of the Divine." The chaotic noise of a hundred trillion voices on a billion planets and a thousand planes of existence screaming their wonderment fill you with pride and strength. Thus ends the story of Servelan de Vermiis, and thus begins that of Eris, Goddess of Chaos.

Penned by my hand on the 7th of Scarlatan, in the year 190 AF.
