Surely it could be that our eagles eyes have a limit?
Like condors eyes, which can see only a short way, eagles could perhaps see only a short way into the ocean, before even their formidable lenses may give way to distance? In which case the reason we cannot see these islands is not because they are around the other side of a sphere, but because we simply cannot see that distance across a flat surface?
