The Church

My dearest Aurora,

I am sure you will recall that during one of my sojourns in Shallam while I was discussing matters of the Church with various priests and paladins, you were kind enough to join me in one of my meetings with high members of the priesthood. During that time I was positing the possibility that because of the perceived moral evolvement of the Church away from its past strict morality and towards a more lax code of conduct gave me an indication that the Church was an organization that has moved closer to my own realm and could expect in the future to enjoy a tighter tie to Myself.

At that time you vehemently refuted my findings and indeed stated that no paladin or priest boasted or bragged about such a thing as killing other mortals. You further declared that every Church member who took a life, even the life of an enemy, truly felt deep sorrow and regret at having to do such a deed. Indeed, the picture of Shallam and the Church you painted was that of an allegedly noble people who reluctantly fought their enemies purely for either self-preservation or a need to protect the land from some perceived menace - that no member of the Church or Shallam killed for the sake of killing, enjoyed killing when they had to, or (horror of horrors) killed for the sake of Chaos.

Although being newly awakened, I could not refute these claims, although it was in direct contrast to my own reports that Shallamese and Church members were acting in just the opposite manner. Thus, I was immensely saddened that perhaps what you said might be true -- that the Church has maintained its inflexible moral strictures that had always opposed Me.

Therefore, I did some research on My own and rejoiced that the picture you painted of Shallam and the Church was far from the mark -- that Chaos indeed could and has been embraced by the Church and Shallam! To wit, I was intrigued that certain paladins who were not members of the Paladins Guild were highly honored citizens in Shallam. At first I had merely guessed that this was merely an excuse to have bloodthirsty killers run loose which the Church could conveniently claim were not their own. However, upon investigation I learned that these guild-less paladins were considered a part of the Church and were held accountable to Church directives and Church leadership.

That being the case, I more fully interviewed one of these Church-approved guildless paladins who were so honored in Shallam and to my utter delight found that he was more than eager and immensely enjoyed killing for the sake of killing, without cause or reason. Since he viewed the members of one guild -- the Infernals -- as persons who he loved to kill, I decided to prove my case and see if he would accept a bargain with Chaos -- to kill Infernals purely for delight and the favour of Chaos. He eagerly accepted. Let it be known that Cooper now bears my divine favour for fulfilling his pact with me -- to kill for the sake of killing, without cause or reason.

As this has proved without a shadow of a doubt My original view that the Church has moved closer to Chaos, I am looking forward to a closer relationship with the Church (or at least some members) in the near future.
