On Integrity

Dear Imperial Sommelier,

And, indeed, to the greater part of Cyrene as a whole, I ask you: whose integrity is greater? The man who found a limited quantity of medicinal fruits and chose to distribute them in accordance with his fairest ethical judgement? Or the nation that took affront to not being a recipient of said fruits quickly enough, and chose instead to act violently in an attempt to seize said fruits?

For too long, I have stood silently and watched as Cyrene descended into an abyss. Longer still, I watched as Cyrene languished in inaction, uncertainty, and moral paralysis, but to think that a nation that once prided itself as a bastion opposed to tyranny, injustice, and cruelty would so quickly about-face and instead embrace violence, genocide, and zealotry boggled my mind.

I commend those of you in Cyrene who have kept the flame alight for your returned Lord. The God-Emperor is a truly awe-inspiring figure, and many of you who remained in, rejoined, or awoke to Cyrene's "revival" are paragons of faith. I find no fault in your worship and, indeed, acknowledge the long and patient road you have walked to reach this day. I know your joy well, and wish you the best of it.

Yet many of you in Cyrene, many of you who were never followers of Lord Neraeos to begin with, I ask you this: what is it like to compromise one's beliefs and embrace a racial hatred you never before held? How many of you can honestly claim to have loathed the atavian people before Lord Neraeos returned? How many of you, prior to His return, performed pogroms in Arcadia with the full intent of wiping out these so-called "devil-spawn"?

How many of you always believed that might is right? That the closed fist was greater than the open hand? How many of you would have scoffed at the notion of pursuing diplomatic negotiations with the leader of the Knights, a figure that, within Cyrene, was regarded as a virtuous and just man? How many of you would have, instead, leapt at the opportunity to attack Aster Malik to take what you wanted by force?

Were the people of Cyrene always so hollow? Were you always so eager to turn to blood?

I am disappointed in you. I always believed Cyrene had great potential, but to see it actualised in such a manner is nothing short of stunning. Once, Cyrene prided itself in being different from the rest of the world. Now, it is merely a bloodthirsty beast pretending at civility. The Lord Bard bids us to remember, lest we forget.

Cyrene, you have forgotten who you were.
