Honour Eternal

Honour.
Possess integrity. Tell no untruth to ally or enemy. Win fairly, or accept defeat. Hold firm to your principles. Accept only what you have earned. Embrace the consequences of your acts.

Duty.
Serve a cause greater than yourself. Bear arms for your cause. Never break an oath once spoken. Possess unquestionable loyalty. Display leadership, and do not flee hard decisions. Choose defeat before cowardice. Choose death before dishonour.

Chivalry.
Hold yourself to higher standards. Show honour when none is shown to you. Strive for fair competition, and be sporting to your foes. Hold few grudges, and praise your enemies when they show merit. Offer honourable challenges to settle disputes, and answer them in kind. Be a paragon of the role that you play.

These are basic principles of the Codes that all Knights of the Guild hold dear. We speak of these virtues often, and strive to live them in our deeds. Each chivalric order writes their Code in their own words, but the same ideas ring clarion through all of them.

But Knighthood is not a monolith. There are five chivalric orders now, and surely they do not see eye to eye on all things! The Codes are means, not ends; the Codes do not care if we protect the weak or oppress them, if we seek to preserve Creation or unravel it. The Codes care only that we pursue our causes with honesty, with constancy, and in good faith toward all. Thus, it is not apt to ask for the Guild definitition of a Knight, for it is the chivalric orders that define their Knights. The Guild serves as the common forum for all Knights to gather, the federation through which we address disagreements, and the court through which we hold each other accountable, so our definitions do not stray too far apart.

Indeed, Sapience, five of your six cities boast a chivalric order! So do not take my views as Knightly canon, but ask your countrymen what defines a Knight of your nation. Ask the Order of Thurisaz. Ask the Infernal Rite. Ask the Knights of Hashan. Ask the Gaian Knights. Ask the Doomguard. Each of them will tell you of Knighthood through the lens of their culture, but you shall see the common values that bind us into one Guild. And if the Knights of your land align with your virtues, then join them! Though our causes may be in conflict, let us salute each other as equals as we compete by honourable means.

You and I, Imperator Ulvin, have only known each other as enemies. But in that time, you have answered every honourable challenge I have offered, and you have spoken always with a civil tongue. Perhaps our views of Honour are not so different. Perhaps in the Doomguard you shall find Knighthood that aligns with the Empire of Ruin, and I shall one day salute you as brethren.

In honor eternal,
Ser Aerek Ancyrion
