Of Lies and Truths

The greatest lie the Eastern province ever told Sapience was that their motives were just, and that for all they did, it was for the Greater Good. They said 'Greater Good,' yet all I saw was a bunch of small-minded tyrants mouthing mindless platitudes to excuse their atrocities. You are right, however, in that Mathonwy is a tool. The whole of Mhaldor are tools, given shape in the forge of Suffering by our Master's indomitable will. And like good tools we serve whatever purpose He sets us to. If it is to be, then he along with any else who make pilgrimage to Mhaldor will have the opportunity to have their conviction and sincerity tested in the same fires we are all smelted in, to better test our grade.

A city that will fall at the hands of its own tenets? Yet, as I look around me I see naught but ancient, hardened stone, mountain bone carved into a living monument to the purpose we serve. Despite the efforts of the Mhun of Moghedu, the Dala'myrr, and every attempt in between to dislodge it, Mhaldor stands firm in defiance. A shadow of what it once was, perhaps, but it still stands. The same cannot be said for Shallam. Every city falls from power in time, and yet Mhaldor will once more rise into notoriety, spreading the Truths and the lessons they offer far and wide.

Yes, should it be His desire, Mathonwy will submit and subsequently break under my Master's will. This is well and good, for the first step to building something stronger is to break it down, tear away the excess, and expose the raw essence beneath. As prayer scours clean the soul, pain purifies the body, and here in Mhaldor we willingly embrace equal parts of both.

If Truth is what you seek, Hanley, you've but to make the long, arduous trek across the land and up the mountain, as many have. If you survive the journey, perhaps you too can know what real strength is. For Suffering is like a flame; it melts the weak but it tempers the strong. Such is the life of a slave; such is the life of a tool. All for the Greater Evil.

Penned by my hand on the 4th of Miraman, in the year 655 AF.
