Shallam

To the young woman whose eighteen years grants her so much wisdom and
insight, and whose obvious experience and complete knowledge of the
world might be seen as a tad suspect,

You were enemied for a very simple, quite clear reason. You made a
clear, public showing of enmity to the values that Shallam holds dear,
to the Ideals on which she is founded. I can think of little better
reason for the city to acknowledge you as a force in opposition to it,
probably one which will pose a future physical threat.

You see, young woman, Shallam is painted by its idealogical adversaries
and malcontented former citizens as the pinnacle of hypocrisy in our
world. This is simply not true. We have hypocrites among us, to be sure,
but no fewer and no more than any random sample of any given population.
However, in the eye of the public, Shallam is put in "Damned if we do,
damned if we don't" scenarios. Anyone who makes a decision in either
direction is then portrayed as a hypocrite.

Allow me to posit an example: the enemying of proven idealogical
opponents. Someone, such as yourself, assists an Occultist in an
experiment. Keep in mind that said experiment so depraved and
horrifyingly unnatural that the products of her repeated failures
shamble in eternal torment in her underground maze. The zombified
corpses of children, sacrificed so that this woman might animate a
corpse into a semblance of her lost nephew. Children! How can you sleep
at night knowing that you have participated in such a vile scheme? But I
digress.

In such a case, a person so heartless and divorced from anything
resembling Goodness is clearly not someone that the City of Light would
call a friend. Rather, committing such a horrible and evil act warrants
recognition as someone opposing our core values.

Now we come to the crux of the issue: Shall we formally acknowledge this
person as an enemy of the Jewel of the East, or turn the other cheek in
the face of Chaos and Evil? If we ignore what goes on in the world
around us, we are called weak, toothless, and are called hypocrites for
not following through on our supposed beliefs. But by doing what we know
in our heart to be Righteous, you call us hypocrites, you say we have
wronged you.

If by doing what we believe to be the right thing we become hypocrites,
then I gladly take up that mantle and wear it with pride. After all, I'm
damned if I do, and I'm certainly damned if I don't.

Minister of Security of Shallam

Post Script: To forestall inquiries and attacks on the validity and
propriety of my remarks, I believe, as Shallam's Minister of Security, I
am qualified to speak with authority on behalf of Shallam concerning its
laws and especially its enemying policies.
