-----------------------------------------------------
It's not easy to create a Masterpiece... even to the most talented of
artists. Somehow, they manage to creative magnificence on what seems
like a whim. But is there a method to the madness of the artistic mind?
Is there a system that they follow?
No way. At the least, not an established one.
To try and solidly define the complexities of the artist's mind is a
rather silly notion. While there may be form and shape and rules to
creating specific types of art, the process in which the artist creates
art itself cannot be codified. However, I will attempt to explain that
process by comparing the cycles of the moon to the development of a
masterpiece.
The New Moon: Pre-Conception
----------------------------
Most masterpieces began with an absence. The absence of thought, the
absence of worry, the absence of stress. The mind is the most perceptive
to inspiration when it is unburdened. So the beginning of the Artistic
Cycle is akin to the beginning of the Lunar Cycle... There is no knowing
what goes on in the mind of an artist at this stage, just as there is no
knowing the fate of the Lunar Orb during the new moon. Uncertainty and
intrigue are what drive artists to seek out that spark that is needed to
create a masterpiece.
The Waxing Moon: Creation
-------------------------
Creating a work of art never happens instantly. It is constantly edited,
refined, contemplated, and pored over. Like the waxing moon, a piece of
art in development gradually grows in intensity and splendour.
The Full Moon: Completion
-------------------------
A completed masterpiece is the most glorious part of the cycle. It
dominates, much like the Full Moon dominates the night sky. It demands
attention from the viewers, and cannot easily be ignored. It's influence
spreads like moonbeams over the fields and the streams and the mountains
and the lakes.
For the Artist, this is the moment of his greatest pride, the
realization of a goal completed, a masterpiece to showcase. However,
like the Full Moon, this phase only lasts a short time, as time must
move on, and an Artist can not live from one masterpiece alone.
The Waning Moon: Introspection
------------------------------
Upon completing a masterpiece, artists often take some time before
beginning another. This time is sometimes used to relax, sometimes to
brainstorm ideas. The Essence of the previous work begins to fade into
the artist well, and the prospect of a new masterpiece begins.
As I mentioned before, to try and define the inner-workings of an
artist's mind is rather silly. However it is my intention to promote a
basic understanding of the artist's mind, by explaining by means of a
phenomenon we have experienced all of our lives.
