This is a copy of some letters written by two people that lived during
the times known as the Burning Times. This is a look at the history of
the Church's persecution against the Occultists.


Dearest Emogene:
Please be very careful. We have lost touch with the Jaru Cabal and Zeke
suspects the worst. Is it true that the Church has launched a crusade
against any who practice the occult? Granted the failed experiments have
produced unfortunate results, but certainly they have been contained for
the most part. What does Sidgar say? I know he is your husband and
father to your children, but can you trust him if the Church exerts
pressure? Forgive me for asking that, but he always jokingly said he was
"turning a blind eye" when it came to your occult studies.
The Thera Cabal has given Zeke an idea for creating a focal point of the
karmic ties of all occultists, past, present and future. Though this
might be the solution to avoid the Shakira Effect, I'm a bit uncertain
if it's possible or even desired, but with the Delosian Templars raging
through the cities and villages we are desperate for anything.

Dear Gwen,
Affairs have suddenly grown grim. For two days now, Sidgar has not
returned home. When I asked at his office, I was informed that he's gone
on a "pilgrimage" to the Chrysalis Basilica, but somehow I believe that
his pilgrimage will not involve a great deal of prayer. I've sent the
children to stay with relatives, ones who have no ties at all to the
Cabal. I can only hope that they will be safe there. I myself am leaving
Shallam for Thera. The Cabal there has fully subverted the Theran branch
of the Church, and so I can be assured of safety. I long to invade the
Basilica with a horde of entities and rescue my husband, but Occultism
will be better served by my continued leadership.
At Thera, I'll work with Dion on the links between spiritual karma and
the Chaos Plane. He's a gifted young man, even brighter than his father.
Occultism seems to run in the deVermiis family. And his ideas are
intriguing
currently we must study for years to gain the karma for even
a single Chaos pact. Imagine how strong our Domination could be if the
process were so greatly accelerated!
Have you received word from the Tomacula and Kasmarkin Cabals? Their
research may prove vital, although the last I heard, Tomacula was
besieged by Mhun raiders. The Cabal there is drained of karma and
doesn't have enough gold to form a pact with Istria, so there's no easy
way for them to flee. Perhaps a relief effort? It seems that we are
attacked on all sides these days.
