Orphans

Speaking not on behalf of Shallam, but as a Shallamite...

When I was a novice, it was required that we knew how to help the
orphans who wandered our streets. And while this wasn't so long ago, it
has been a while, and this was before the seemingly renewed fears of the
Spawn. We had to know this quest not so we could keep ourselves safe
from the big scary Spawn-man, but so that we could do some Good for our
city and Her citizens. And yes, the orphans are Her citizens, under Her
protection and care. We helped them because a warm meal, clothing, and
shelter are the basic rights for any citizen. We did help them for the
sake of their own well-being.

And that hasn't changed. Our novices do not think of the Spawn when they
hurry around the streets to find the unfortunate children and bring them
to Handel. I'd be surprised if half the novices even knew what the Spawn
was. No, the novices think about helping the children, about doing Good
deeds, about being Good people. And yes, the young people of our city
are the ones doing most of the enrolling. Not because the rest of us
don't care, but because it gives our novices the chance to see what one
little Good deed can accomplish, and to see that they can do great deeds
while still young, still rather unkown to the world and even the city.

So before you accuse us of ushering away the children to put down our
own fears, find a Shallamese novice. First, ask them what the Spawn is.
Odds are they have no idea, and even less idea that butchering the
orphans can help summon it. Then ask if they're really just doing this
for the sake of being Good.

Just some little Shallamite,
