Actually Yig, I think you will find that "an" is not
acceptable in regard to "Herb". Whether or not
pronunciation may vary, written language follows the
rules of spelling and grammar. These rules dictate as
Codere correctly put it, that "an" is only associated with
words starting with vowels. Abbreviations vary from place
to place, from dialect to dialect. If abbreviations and
pronunciation were part of the rules of grammar there
would be a million different combinations.
