Foregone Roots

All things seek to learn and grow,
but wand'ring greens make shallow roots -
and some things lose what they forego.
Your doubtful seeds 'cross lands may blow
to bleed and sup of sanguine fruits -
as all things seek to learn and grow -
but when the clouds convene to snow
upon your unsure attributes,
you'll lose these things that you forego.
And when the red sun blazes so -
and when your stem's beat down by boots -
the things you sought to learn and grow?
You'll find them not in fields fallow,
nor in the bluster sung by brutes,
but in the things that you forego.
While I would never wish you woe,
this lesson's one that none disputes:
while all things seek to learn and grow,
some things lose what they forego.
