The Abyss

When first you came, the dawn was born,
You chased away my endless storm.
Where shadows ruled and silence grew,
The world found light because of you.
But now you've gone, and with you fled
The dreams that once my spirit fed.
The skies have dimmed, the star light died;
Even hope has turned to hide.
The sun still climbs, but brings no flame;
It wears the light, but not the name.
Its golden face is cold and blind,
Like broken promise I left behind.
I walk where once we laughed as one,
Yet every road comes undone.
Each step I take through ash and stone
Reminds me I now walk alone.
The wind no longer sings your grace;
It rests the silence in your place.
It whispers through the barren trees
With words that cut far more than freeze.
An endless void, a starless sea,
Has stretched its hungry arms for me.
A black abyss without a shore,
Where echoes answer... nevermore.
I knew the dark before we met;
Its cruel embrace I won't forget.
But then your heart became my sky,
A place where broken souls could fly.
Now winter claims what spring had grown;
The frost has made my heart its throne.
The fire your gentle spirit cast
Has dwindled to its ash at last.
I hold no anger; I bear the shame;
Love is a debtor's cruel game.
The heart obeys no spoken vow
It simply knows... and knows not how.
So should you seek another dawn,
While I remain where light has gone,
Then let this truth forever be:
The brightest part of life to me...
...is still you.
And though the heavens still appear,
Their constellations disappear.
For every star above has fled
The night you left...
my world went dead.
