Vilmar and his beautiful bride
(The string is made of gold)
They played dice games side by side
(He played so well for his love)
For every time the dice were rolled
(The string is made of gold)
So many tears her eyes unrolled
(He played so well for his love)
"Why do you weep for gold so bright?"
(The string is made of gold)
"Or grieve because you'll wed tonight?"
(He played so well for his love)
"Or do you weep that I am poor?"
(The string is made of gold)
"And cannot match the wealth you wore?"
(He played so well for his love)
"I do not weep for gold so bright"
(The string is made of gold)
"Nor that I wed with you tonight"
(He played so well for his love)
"Nor yet because you're not of fame"
(The string is made of gold)
"For heart to heart we are the same"
(He played so well for his love)
"But still I weep, for soon I'll ride"
(The string is made of gold)
"Across the stream so deep and wide"
(He played so well for his love)
"For there my gentle sisters drowned"
(The string is made of gold)
"Upon their wedding's joyful sound"
(He played so well for his love)
***
They rode that evenin' to temple and vow
(The string is made of gold)
Through the large bridge beyond the boughs
(He played so well for his love)
But up from the flood the Sea Devil cried
(The string is made of gold)
"Come drown like your sisters and be my bride!"
(He played so well for his love)
Her cerulean horse trembled, reared in dread
(The string is made of gold)
She fell to the stream with her veil outspread
(He played so well for his love)
The Devil seized her in his arm
(The string is made of gold)
And sang her down with sea-born charm
(He played so well for his love)
Then Vilmar grasped his beautiful harp
(The string is made of gold)
Its voice was pure, its sound was sharp
(He played so well for his love)
"I am absolute" said the Devil
(The string is made of gold)
"What makes you think your harp is so special?"
(He played so well for his love)
Still Vilmar played the Sun down through the clouds
(The string is made of gold)
He played the Moon to still the tides
(He played so well for his love)
For the Devil's surprise Creation was lulled
(The string is made of gold)
Through melody Devil's pride was culled
(He played so well for his love)
Then rose his bride all fair and free
(The string is made of gold)
No longer charmed by the sea
(He played so well for his love)
So sweet the enchanted harp notes came
(The string is made of gold)
Even charm upon the sisters was unmade
(He played so well for his love)
Fair Freedom rose with shining eyes
(The string is made of gold)
And Justice now no longer cries
(He played so well for his love)
Now the fae-gifted harp lies by the stream
(The string is made of gold)
And never again shall the Devil dream
(He played so well for his love)
