Forest's Lament

Blood red moon hung in the night sky,
coloured by burning, glowing glade.
Songbirds screamed as night went awry,
destroying lives of troll and maid.

Fire blazed brightly, without warning,
as he watched her from a distance.
The wind, it howled, loud and mourning,
while fire stole the maid's existence.

The forest burned so high and swift,
he had no chance to warn his love,
He could only watch growing rift,
as rain fell like tears from above.

Dawn dully creeped through smokey haze.
as he sat numbly, so confused.
He longed to feel her loving gaze,
her death adamantly refused.

Where once had lain fuzzy catkin,
that glowed with ambered autumn hue,
now on the ground was ash spread thin,
mocking the memory he knew.

Beneath the moon, they'd danced before,
lost to the forest's serenade.
She'd held with him such a rapport
that with her loss he felt betrayed.

He knew she'd want him to go on,
his heart, though, wished to be alone.
Could he survive another dawn?
His heart unsure, it was unknown.

Eyes closed, he heard the mourning dove
and felt his heart would never heal.
For her he'd live alone, not love.
His heart forever he would seal.

Blood red moon hung in the night sky,
coloured by burning, glowing glade.
Songbirds screamed as night went awry,
destroying lives of troll and maid.
