The Raven and the Phoenix

Performed for Lady Selene at the annual Eros concert in her honour; the
theme was rebirth.
The raven
Black as soot with talons sharp
Oft adorns the hilltop Oak
Like a sable jewel upon
A pendant 'round a widow's throat
His a cry of lowly mourning
Sharp-edged full of timbre dark
And lonely in the starless night
Cold the fire that casts no spark
Death takes all and leaves a space
To fill with memories of grace
The phoenix
Rises from the ash and smoke
Of fires burned to coal and cinder
Dreams the fuel that feeds the blaze
Hope uncaged the smouldering tinder
Bird of light your life's beginning
The furnace has become a womb
From out of death life returning
Delivered from the fiery tomb
Birth's a new resounding verse
A song to drown deaths silent curse
Penned by my hand on the 25th of Lupar, in the year 396 AF.
