My Songbird

Weeping in the sunlight,
I found a songbird in the grass
He just wanted to take flight
But fell from heaven fast

A broken wing and shattered pride
His heart was cleaved in twain,
No song was heard, instead it sighed
Engulfed in unbearable pain.

A nest of finest silk I built,
His wings I sought to mend,
Melted were his thoughts of guilt,
Comfort found in his new friend

As he healed, he sang for me
The most beautiful of songs
Singing, "Now I'm finally free,
"I'll be happy all life long!"

But I couldn't keep him to myself,
And time served as a sign;
When my songbird would regain his health,
He'd no longer be mine.

One morning I heard him say,
"M'lady, I'm good as new!
"I know life is great day after day,
As long as I'm with you!"

I gently took him from his nest,
And brought him to a tree,
Said, "Now you have to do your best,
"To be happy without me."

Tears flooded his onyx eyes,
He sang a song of woe,
He didn't want to say goodbye,
But I had to let him go.

Weeping in the sunlight
Through heavens did he soar
I watched him finally take flight
Now his song I hear no more.

Penned by my hand on the 2nd of Sarapin, in the year 388 AF.
