The Mystery of the Heavens

Based upon an old (old) joke....

Into the vast dark desert
A-hunting giant lizard
Poggle the servant went
And his master, the mighty Wizard.

A-waking in the midnight hour
Poggle heard his master sigh
And looking over saw the Wizard
Staring at the sky.

"Master," Poggle said,
"I see you in your bed,
What occupied your thoughts
Whilst the stars shone overhead?"

The Wizard turned to Poggle
And said that he divined
That while he'd lain and pondered
Three things he'd had in mind.

He'd marvelled at the beauty
Of the twinkling silver span
That surely testified
To the gods' immortal plan.

He'd wondered if each star
Had worlds that circled near
And were there people on those worlds
Filled with hope and fear.

He'd tried to vainly measure
Space's vast expanse
And comprehend the pattern
Of the stars' ethereal dance

The Wizard in condescending voice
Said, "Poggle, you're here too.
Have the stars granted any insight
Unto the likes of you?"

Poggle struggled to his feet
His back all bowed and bent
And said "I only wondered,
Who'd pinched our bloody tent!"

Penned by my hand on the 16th of Glacian, in the year 387 AF.
