Giants from another Realm

Giants from another realm, brought to us by a portal of light.
Symbols of some new hope, or bearing a slaver's rope?
They call our language inferior, but this can mean many things.
Different beliefs, different cultures - cause to leave them to the
vultures?

They send a teacher amongst us, so that we might learn their tongue.
Ambassador to a far land, or is there a reason more underhand?
They build a fortress in the wastes, around the link between our worlds,
A refuge, a walled homestead, or perhaps a fortified beachhead?

People with but a single life themselves, they give us gifts.
Signs of blessings in store, or cursed as some monkey's paw?
Machines that bring life back to the dead of our world.
Charity to those who are lost, or disguising some yet unknown cost?

They assist the people of the Desert, bringing water and life.
Angels who minister, or something more sinister?
They are cut down, time and again, their lives lost forever.
A dastardly occasion or legitimate defence against invasion?

Caution in our dealings is acceptable, paranoia is not.
Opportunities may be missed by red unthinking rage.
But neither must we blindly accept the hand that is offered.
Does this all herald a golden or a darker age?

Penned by my hand on the 5th of Glacian, in the year 381 AF.
