Friends (...original, I know!)

I used to have friends,
They joked and they jeered,
Like snivelling foreigners
With their cruel mockery.

The shrieking has dimmed
Since they left
Me, went away. And in the silent
Numbness, I can't help wonder
Was it me?

I try to convince myself
There are others, they don't matter,
But deep down I know
My friends cannot be replaced.

What once was five,
Is now but one.
