Loved and Lost

Don't know where this came from. I was sitting on a balcony atop the
Pantheon of Gods in Cyrene, and I reflected on what it's like.

It is better to have loved and lost,
Then to never have loved at all
Is that the way life is?
Make you pick up the pieces after you fall,
After you lose it all, you're suppose to stand tall?

It's like saying that after having somebody's heart,
Depending on it like you own,
Then having it forcefully ripped from the side of yours
As your heart is left bleeding and wounded,
That somehow, someway or another,
This is better then not having loved.

Your heart left scarred, after loving another,
Losing the thing that your happiness used to depend on,
Left in sadness, in the dark, alone,
When there used to be a light next to you,
Shining bright whenever darkness crept near,
The bulb has burnt out and long since left,
Stuck in the shadows as no light can be seen.

Yet somehow this is better,
Better then not being hurt at all?
Does that even make sense?
Sense was thrown to the sharks,
In the midst of them devouring your heart,
Shark infested waters soaked with your blood.

Before love came by, your heart was alone,
But at least it was whole,
Untouched, unscarred, not ripped to shreds,
In one piece, still in the wrapping,
You were alone, yet happy,
But you longed for a companion,

Was it worth the risk?
Was it worth the scarring that your left with?
Did you learn your lesson this time?
The last time,
Wounded and bleeding,
Yet better then before?
No more, cant take anymore,
As you watch your blood wash ashore,

Taking your heart,
You tuck it away,
Deep away,
Where no hands may reach it,
Afraid to let another in,
Afraid to be hurt again,
Dont want to lose it all for nothing,
For more pain and scars.

You lock it up,
Throwing away the key,
The key to your sorrow,
Yet your only key to true happiness,
You trade all chance of real love away,
Trading it away for less pain in your life.

Is it better now?
Was it worth your sacrifice?
Your heart is lost forever,
But all is now better,
Or so it seems,
In reality sorrow has won,
Kept you from your goal,
The goal of love,
You thought it was worth the cost,
But now all is lost.
