The theft of the crystal decanter

A calm spring night brought darkness to Sapience the night of Miraman 9,
407 years after the fall of the Seleucarian Empire. At the stroke of
midnight, untold minions of undeath, believed to be led by Prince Slith,
assaulted the city of Shallam once again. This time, they had an
unexpected ally: Mhaldor.

The previous year, a menacing demi-lich appeared in the city of Mhaldor,
requesting the help of the city of evil. In the presence of Lord
Apollyon, he offered a gift of good will: the Idol of Corruption. The
demi-lich explained that the Idol, once blessed with evil, would require
the blood of children. Apollyon accepted the gift on behalf of Mhaldor
and gave it His most powerful blessing. Over the next few months and
into the next year, the Idol continued to fill with the blood of
innocent children. Some witnesses estimate the number of bodies
sacrificed at nearly five thousand, with Floralei Amakiir-Sioraiocht
filling the Idol with her final sacrifice.

The demi-lich returned during Daedalan and began to speak of a raid upon
Shallam. In a private meeting with high-ranking Mhaldorian officials
including minister of war Luggs de Soulis, Viceroy Herenicus Coldraven,
and Tyrannus Wulfen, the demi-lich revealed that the ultimate goal was
the retrieval of the crystal decanter in Shallam, an object containing
the divine essence of Shallamese patrons, past and present. Mhaldor
agreed to help them, and over the next two months both sides began to
plan for the raid.

Midnight tolled throughout the land to signal the beginning of the 10th
of Miraman, and the assault began. Unlike previous assaults, the
mastermind behind this heinous act knew that this raid was the one that
had the best chance of succeeding. Stepping into the city with immense
power and a seemingly unstoppable ability to regenerate, undead hoards
of all kinds advanced towards the southeast corner of the city,
preparing their massive assault.

Meanwhile, the demi-lichs and Mhaldorians entered the city over the Jaru
bridge, with one demi-lich assaulting city defenders using common
defense tactics in skills such as telepathy, kaido, and crystalism.

Many died on both sides of the battle, but it was clear that Mhaldor and
the undead had an insurmountable advantage in numbers and strength. It
was mid-morning by the time the first waves of undead reached the
decanter. Once they got there, however, they dug in and concentrated on
the task of removing the decanter from Shallam. Many Shallamese defended
the decanter from these forces, but even more undead continued to
descend upon the decanter. The protective shield around the decanter
fell in a blast of silver and gold energy, and mere minutes later the
decanter disappeared, accompanied by a loud boom.

As Mhaldor continued to fight their way into the city, a black cloud
hung over Shallam, crackling with dark energy as it grew to an
incredible size before ominously vanishing with a loud pealing. This
unnatural occurrence signified that the forces of undead had achieved
their goal.

Shallamese were left in a state of confusion, most not realising that
the shield around the altar was not the one that protected the decanter.
But they all knew the harsh reality of what happened: the decanter was
gone.
