Call for coders.

As many things loom upon the horizon, the time is once more upon us: we are once more opening a call for volunteer coder applicants.

Volunteer coders will be promoted to a Celani role and undergo training with the systems they'd be expected to be familiar with as a coder - there is some overlap here with things rp celani would learn, but they are different. As a result, this path does not lead to a god role, though this is on the table down the line if you decided it is something you'd be interested in (there would just be more to learn at that time!)

Notably, we are changing one of our long held rules surrounding coder applicants, and that is the one concerning the ban on returning to mortal characters down the line. We're aware this has always been a serious sticking point for a lot of people and understandably so, and no longer feel that it is a necessary prohibition to keep in place given the general reduction in high value information that is obscured on the code side. So if in a few months you did decide it just wasn't for you anymore, you would be able to return to your previous characters (there might be a delay as with any celani who steps down due to having time critical information about upcoming events or similar, but this tends not to be long). Naturally, coders would be held to a much higher standard here and its quite a time investment to get one up and running, so I'd still ask that you only apply if you're serious about the position!

How to apply
1- Read HELP CELANI in full. These are things that you will need to know before you apply.
2- Due to the legal obligations of this position, we require all applicants to be 18 years of age or older. We prefer experienced and mature candidates with at least 500 hours of playtime under their belt, though this isn't a hard and fast rule!
3- Send a plain-text email to both ictinus@achaea.com and makarios@achaea.com with the following information:
- Your real name.
- Your real age.
- Your regular occupation and employer (if you're a student, let us know what school you attend, and what you major in).
- Your characters in Achaea, and a brief list of their accomplishments.
- How many hours per week you feel you can contribute to Achaea in this role.
- A paragraph or two outlining your coding background, what your language proficiencies are, as well as any other skills you feel that you bring to the table (*nix admin / SQL etc.).
- Your general interests/what you'd ideally like to work on. If you're applying because you like the idea of working on combat systems, let us know. If economy is your thing, let us know. If you just want to fix bugs, that's great too. There are a ton of things in the works and this is generally very flexible.

Deadlines
Applications must be received by 0 gmt on the tenth of June (that's the serenade!).

Quick FAQ:

Q: How long does it take before I get to make a class?

A: A while. Generally source access can happen anywhere from one to three months, depending on how quickly you get through the other parts of the training.

Q: do I have to have Linux to do this?

A: you would need some kind of access to a linux machine to run rapture, though WSL on windows works too. Cygwin isn't sufficient, so if you're stuck on some ancient version of windows and can't run a vm, you might be out of luck. Otherwise you'll be just fine!

Q: Could I get paid?

A: potentially. This depends a lot on the candidate, Achaea's current financial situation, other candidates, etc. There is just a lot which goes into this so it is never something we can commit to, but it is a pretty consistent feature that Achaea's paid engineers tend to come from the playerbase at this point.

If you have any further questions, feel free to drop Ictinus or myself a message or email.
