Seafaring

As Seafaring nears completion, several new abilities to the skill have
been added, including keelhauling, cooking, and a number of powerful
Seaspells. For Seaspells, you must obtain and consecrate a figurehead,
mount it to your ship, then meld with its psyche in order to invoke the
power of a sea spirit linked thus to your ship. (HELP SEASPELLS)

For testing purposes, access to the abilities within Seafaring have thus
far been available to the general public without need for learning. This
is a temporary state of affairs, and this state grows increasingly
temporary! Very soon now, Seafaring will become a general skill which
you may only gain access through a Fully Attested Marque of Unquestioned
Seaworthiness (also known as a F.A.M.O.U.S.). After obtaining a fully
attested Marque, one must expend lessons in it, as with any other
general skill such as Riding or Tattoos. See HELP MARQUE for more
information. Yes, all current ship owners will be given a free Marque.
(Owners, not captains!) This should not be new information to those with
ships, merely a reiteration and reminder of what has been known.

Some other recent changes:

- Ship manoeuvre status now affects your ability to sail through a
seaspell-summoned whirlpool, as well as the frequency at which the
balance of one without the Sealegs ability in Seafaring is affected by
ocean travel.
- If your sails are on fire, you may now either DOUSE FIRE (with bucket
of water in hand), CAST FLOOD or CAST RAINSTORM (if you have the
elementalism abilities), or FREEZE SAILS (if you have the icebreath/
freeze ability/Bracers of Frost) from the Crow's Nest to extinguish
the flames.
- If the deck or sails are on fire, periodic damage to the hull or
sails, respectively, will occur until the flames are extinguished.
- The seaspell Rainstorm will put out all shipboard conflagrations at
once, both sails and hull.
- Flares may now be shot AT ships, with a chance of catching the deck on
fire. If shot through an onager, there's a chance of catching the sails
on fire as well.
- The Helm and Watch specialisations now have access to the SHIPMELD
ability, which was previously only available to the Command
specialisation.
- AB files added for nearly all Seafaring abilities.
- Sealegs ability moved from Deckhand specialisation to general.

Penned by My hand on the 6th of Daedalan, in the year 493 AF.
