roleplay

Someone brought to my attention that perhaps the recent rolepoint
system has been somewhat misunderstood. This person told me that he
misses hearing jokes, etc and doesn't like the silence. Allow me to
point out that jokes aren't bad roleplay.

All I ask really is that things related to OOC matters be kept to
as much a minimum as possible, especially on shouts and on the news.
The idea here is to create an appropriate atmosphere for a fantasy
world. This surely doesn't mean everyone has to be serious and such, however.
We're all familiar, I'm sure, with the archetypes of the court jester,
the happy-go-lucky rogue, the bard, etc. Roleplay does NOT mean
dark and serious, unless that is what you want your role to be.
If you want to shout about nonsense, I don't care, as long as it
isn't OOC nonsense, such as jokes about computer nerds or shouts
about how much you love Robert Jordan or whoever.

We realize that one of the prime attractions of a mud is the
community that you can create for yourself within the game, and that
this community is independent of role for the most part. You make
friends whom even if Achaea shut down today, you'd keep talking to
over ICQ or e-mail or whatnot, and naturally none of us care if you
talk to those people out of role. What we mainly care about is that
people who are interested in roleplaying do not have the environment
ruined for them by forcing OOC things on them via shouts, news, and,
to a more limited extent, guildtalk. GT is a bit fuzzier of an issue
as it is a more private affair. My suggestion for GT would be to
use your judgement. If a newbie has just been inducted into the guild,
it probably wouldn't be good to talk about your RL personal life over
GT.

Penned by my hand on the 19th of Aeguary, in the year 212 AF.
