My very first love was a sailor man,
His very first love was the sea,
He took my heart and did depart, and
Never again saw I he
Stood I on the shore
(Though he was no more)
In hopes my heart
Be returned to me
"Love not" promised I 'midst the crash of waves,
"For love be precursor to woe",
The foam-white waves agreed with me as
They yearned for the moon's pale glow
Stood I on the beach
(Heart still out of reach)
Fearing love would
I ne'er again know
Then, lo, like a phantom, a ship did sail
'Cross the stretch of horizon vast,
And when I did see the captain's face,
Thought I: "Here! My heart at last"
Stood we on the sand
(A heart in his hand)
Whether t'was mine,
Neglected I ask
But onto the shore stepped a lovely girl,
And smiled at the heart held with care:
"I see you've kept safe what gave I you"
And left was I standing there
Stood I a lone fool
(With ache ever cruel)
As the gulls' screech
Sat sour on the air
My heart did I give to a sailor man,
It sank to the depths like a stone,
Whether I should ever get it back,
Oceanus only knows
Penned by my hand on the 25th of Glacian, in the year 1010 AF.
