<@> The Room without a Door <@>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He sits before a portrait of his mother,
The ghosts of everyone he's loved
breathing softly in the corners.
Here is what he knows:
He is in a room he cannot leave.
Not because the door is locked -
but because he cannot find it.
He traces the walls with trembling hands,
follows the seams where moonlight seeps in,
presses his ear to every surface, listening
for the sound of the other side
Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
He asks her, though she cannot answer:
Was there ever a door?
Or have I been standing
in a room with no way out,
Calling it hope?
Asking her still,
though she cannot answer.
