The Shattered Throne

Creation was quiet as the various realms recovered from the devastating loss of Lord Thoth and the shocking appointment of Ugrach, the King of the Underworld in His place. A simple escort to the realm where souls dwell and placement on the deceased God's Throne was all that was needed to complete the golden bargain struck by the Lord of Wealth.

The best laid plans of Gods have a tendency to go awry.

Left too long without the stabilising presence of an occupant, Death's seat shattered. The fragments scattered across Achaea, seeking out loci of death energy with haphazard determination.

Without the grim Throne, the newly-appointed incumbent would be without the power to complete his labours. The power necessary to regulate death resided within the fell cathedra, not Lord Ugrach.

Their intentions foiled, the Garden began the work needed to once again stabilise the realm of Death, sending Demigods to ensure the manifestation and retrieval of the fragments of the Throne.

For a month did the collective might of Achaea hunt down and slay the mightiest denizens they could locate, retrieving piece after piece of the sundered throne. Ahmet, Farrah, Atalkez, Antidas, Florentino, Patroklos, Skye, Sarathai, Seragorn, and Gilt all claimed shards through means of might and persuasion until a single fragment remained. This resided in the gut of a leviathan of legend that plagued the Phocian Reaches.

Never before had a sea beast of this magnitude been slain by mortal hands yet, if the Garden's bargain was to hold, slay it the mortals must. Kasa Lighthawk of Hashan put out the call for any ships intrepid enough to tackle the beast and the mariners of Eleusis, Hashan, and Targossas stepped forth, sailing willingly into grave peril.

Once, twice, and thrice over did the seafarers raise and engage the monstrous creature. Suffering losses of life and vessel, they continued on until a final dart from the Targossians put an end to the menace. Flushed with victory at being the first to achieve the impossible, they returned home, throne fragment in hand.

Many thronged into the soulrealms, ushered by Death's Gatekeeper into the maze. They navigated the treacherous path and acquired the necessary coin to pay the toll required to ferry them to the very gates of Death. Within, they found an empty dais and a final challenge: reassembling Death's Seat.

For days did they labour, formulating theories and casting them aside as quickly until under the direction of the Mhaldorian Jarrod Dracrotalus, they formulated a strategy and erected the throne piece by painstaking piece.

With the final fragment in place, a baleful light gleamed from the jagged cracks. The Throne of Thoth required death energy to heal its wounds and there were many souls before it, ready for harvest.

Harvest them it did.

With the Throne reformed and empowered, Lord Prospero and Lord Phaestus escorted the King from the Underworld to his new demesne. Lord Ugrach placed his ebony crown upon the Seat and saw it transformed in appearance, a skeletal monstrosity to match its new occupant.

With a foreboding smile and no hesitation, Ugrach took his place as Curator of Death, and awaited the first mortal to pass into his Halls.

Summary: The Throne of Death shattered and needed to be reassembled before Ugrach, the King of the Underworld, could take up his new position as Curator of Death.

Penned by My hand on the 20th of Aeguary, in the year 718 AF.
