Trick and Treat

A laugh and a lie were his tools
to show Mayaween favoured fools.
What he knew not
was what he forgot:
spirits don't like broken rules.

At doors he would knock and away
as people would come with delay.
But when they arrived
into darkness he dived,
and confusion was all that would play.

But after his door-dashing game,
the spirits marked him by his name.
They whispered to him
to risk life and limb,
and he went to their graves without shame.

On tombstone his knocks did resound,
but his mischief there could not be found.
Though he offered trick
it was treat they did pick,
and their bones pulled him into the ground.

A word from the wise to you all -
a lesson to learn before fall.
When you knock on a door
you had better be sure
that you're willing to enter its halls.
