The Vigil and Questions

The Athenaeum's Archivist placed a fresh well of ink upon her desk, idly whisking her cheeks with the feather quill as she considered the blank page before her.

Of the Vigil we know little. Once Jeramun awoke, which was a display that would have gotten the attention of all in the land, they emerged from their cover with a cryptic call to rally the land into restoring the balance by finding the other elementals and waking them also. We assume that there are three more.

This missive was the introduction of the concept of conduits. Exactly what this means, we do not yet know. The gathered minds suggested that "conduit" refers to a tie between the elemental planes and Achaea, which Dekalb may have needed in our planet's infancy to maintain the build of this world. Another idea was that they are a means to reach the elemental planes themselves. And yet another is that they were weapons, created by Dekalb and then hidden away in various forms of imprisonment and slumber.

That these beings are powerful is without doubt. Jeramun's armour encasement, now melted away, appears to have been a constraint for his power rather than a protection for the Flame of the World.

It has since been revealed that at least one member of the Vigil is communicative, Tiamenjiara, who stands in her tower in the palace of Zanzibaar. But exactly what they want beyond the balancing of the world is an unknown.

We also do not know what their symbology stands for: the ivory lighthouse with a crown casting four equidistant beams. Is this a reference to a geological location, or something about their mission? Their words suggest that they have been watching for this since the death of Agatheis, believing elemental war to be an inevitability.

Many do not trust the Vigil, for their reticence and crypticism do not breed confidence. But it is acknowledged that at this time we lack other ideas.

Nissa pushed her glasses back up upon her nose and sighed, massaging her writing hand as she frowned in thought. So many unanswered questions did not make for a useful reference text.
